“You’re scanning the job section and you find it, the perfect job! The more you read the more you love it and want it to be yours, then you get to the last line and your heart sinks:
“Must have 2 years experience in…” or “Must be fully qualified in…” so you carry on doing the same boring job you’ve always done as you still need to live and you can’t do that without money.
I thought I was going to be stuck doing the job of convenience forever, because how can you get experience if no-one will give you the chance and how can you find the time to get qualified when you still need to work?
Then I spotted an advert for Hove College, an evening course learning exactly what was in the criteria of all the jobs I’d fancied. I could have lessons after work!
I was really nervous about going to meet the director of studies; I mean the title itself is scary enough! But to my relief Cameron was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and wasn’t 100 years old! He made it as informal and amusing as possible, it was more like going for a chat with a friend, which made me feel really comfortable and I knew I’d enjoy attending the college.
My teacher, Paul, the Obi-wan of DTP, is really great, the nicest man in the world, went out of his way on many occasions to help me. He makes learning easy and enjoyable which is the best way.
I found an advert for Trainee Mac Operator job at the Argus, the same one I’d applied for a year ago. I didn’t even get an interview that time, but this time I did!
I’m terrible when it comes to interviews; nerves always get the better of me. I spoke to Paul and Cameron, it’d been almost 2 months since I’d completed the course, but without a second thought they’d invited me back to be prepped for the interview.
I got to the interview feeling prepared and ready to answer any questions they threw at me. It turned out to be the best interview I have ever had! I got down to the final 2 out of 100 applicants. I couldn’t believe it! They said the Hove College course put me to the top of the pile! The second interview went really well and I was offered the job!
The course has put my foot in the door of the career I’ve been wanting for so long. The future doesn’t look boring any more and it’s all thanks to the great help and support from Paul and Cameron”
